She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household and a portion to her maidens (Proverbs 31:14-15 KJV).
Many people have gone into marriage without preparing for what matters at home. Lack of domestic preparation is an invitation to failure in the family. You will do yourself a lot of favour if you prepare adequately for domestic activities before you go into marriage. You can prepare for this by doing the following:
- Learn how to cook: Learn the art of cooking. You can’t eat out every day. There is no food like home cook. Ladies most especially should be able to cook good and delicious meals.
- Get all the necessary equipment for your home: To make your domestic work easier and faster get all necessary cooking equipment, cutlery, beddings, cookers, and laundry machines and so on.
- Learn how to use domestic machines: Don’t just buy these machines but learn how to use them accurately.
- Learn about pregnancy and delivery: Take time to learn about pregnancy and delivery. Know challenges that come with it and how to overcome them.
- Learn how and where to shop for household items: As you are preparing for marriage it is good for you to know how and where to shop for household items, grocery, children items and so on.
- Learn how to take care of little children: After the wedding, children will begin to come in. You need to know how to rear and take care of little babies.
- Learn the act of home management: To manage a home you need to learn how to do it. You need to learn this now that you are preparing to get married
- Learn about renting a house: Know what it means to rent a house, the right place to get a house, wrong things people do as they rent a house and how to avoid them.
- Develop homely habit: Now that you are planning to get married, this is the time to develop wholesome homely habits and drop play-boy ones – stop being a party freak. Marital life needs a life of discipline and sound character to make it work. You need to develop a character that builds a home and drop all childish, girlish and boyish habits.
- Develop home service mentality: Domestic preparation involves you learning how to serve at home. Don’t go into marriage with an “eater mentality”. Men should learn that the kitchen is not meant for women only. Be ready to support your wife in cooking and in caring for your children. That marks a real and great father while women should support their husbands to pay bills, house rents and school fees. That is what every good, godly and virtuous woman does
